Black boxes cut young drivers' insurance This is Money

At least five insurers are using 'black-box' satellite trackers to see how and when a car is used to help calculate premiums. Insurers Allianz, Co-op Insurance, Equity Red Star and Groupama have teamed up with technology company Coverbox.

They offer a pay-as-you-drive insurance plan to cut bills for drivers who stay off the roads during the most dangerous hours.

Grant Mitchell, head of motor insurance at Co-operative Insurance, says: 'We've come up with a realistic price of insurance based on the actual dangers when you use the car. If you drive mainly outside rush hour you are likely to save money.' Charges are unique to each driver, but are linked to one of three time periods. Peak hours are 7.30am to 9.00am and 4.30pm to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. Driving outside this time will be classed as cheaper off-peak hours.

Drivers aged under 23 have a special 'super-peak' rate covering the most dangerous hours -between 11pm and 5am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
